The Petra tour from Tel Aviv starts with a short flight south from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport to the Ramon Airport near Eilat. Although you need to get yourself to the airport independently the flight is included in the tour price. You will be met at the Ramon Airport and transferred to the Arava Border crossing.
Our representatives will assist with the border crossing procedure. Once in Jordan, a local tour guide will meet you and the journey continues along the scenic Desert Highway to Petra. The Rose City of Petra was carved out of rock cliffs over 2,000 years ago by the Nabataean people. Enter Petra on horseback or on foot through the narrow Siq, a gorge flanked by soaring cliffs.
As you enter Petra the sight that meets your eyes is the Treasury, a tomb with a breathtaking façade carved into the cliff with columns, statues and decoration. You may recognize the Treasury façade from the film Indiana Jones. In Petra tour the tombs, see temples and walk along the ancient colonnaded street admiring the intricately carved rock facades.
The stunning structures carved out of the red-hued rock cliffs served as the capital of the Nabataean civilization. As a stop on the ancient trade route from the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean Petra welcomed merchant caravans from far and wide. The city was a vital oasis in the harsh desert environment and it had a plentiful water supply thanks to the ingenious water gathering system devised by the Nabataeans. Once you have seen the sites of Petra it is time to make the return journey through the dramatic desert landscape to Eilat for your flight back to Tel Aviv.
Petra tours are guided in English. There is an option for other languages at an additional fee.
