Unlike many tours from Eilat to Jordan this tour leaves in the cool of the evening when you are met at your Eilat hotel and taken the short distance to the Arava border crossing between Israel and Jordan and on to Aqaba. By sleeping over in Jordan you avoid paying the mandatory tax levied on tourists who stay in the country for less than a day. After settling into your Aqaba 3 star hotel on the Jordanian Red Sea coast you can then venture out into this charismatic city and explore it at your leisure. See the 14th century Aqaba Fort, the Ayla, Old City which dates back to 622AD, enjoy the cool sea breeze as you wander along the beach front and perhaps the colorful market. Then choose one of the local restaurants to sample traditional Middle Eastern cuisine as you look out across the crystal clear Red Sea with the mountains of Egypt and Eilat as their backdrop.
After a comfortable night's sleep in your Aqaba hotel and a good breakfast we set out along the Desert Highway to the ancient city of Petra. The Desert Highway will give you a glimpse of the desert landscape with the contrasting colors of sand, red colored mountains in the distance and bright blue sky.
We arrive at the Lost City also known as the Rose City in reference to the many pink hues visible in the monolithic buildings hewn into the rock. We approach the ancient city through the Siq, a narrow naturally formed gorge flanked on both sides by towering rock walls. For an added thrill you can travel the first 200 meters into the Siq on horseback. At the end of the Siq we immerge into the dazzling sunlight in front of the Treasury.
The Treasury is the first of many structures we see in Petra which is hewn from the sandstone cliffs. The Treasury façade rises two stories high and is lined with decorated columns, motifs and statues. We make our way through Petra as visitors to the Nabataean capital did as early as 312BC. Among the breathtaking structures are burial tombs, homes and temples. The Romans spent time in Petra (from 106AD) leaving behind them an immense amphitheatre, temples and the central colonnaded road. Christianity and the Crusaders followed leaving Petra with a monastery and a Byzantine church where we can see what remains of ancient floor mosaics and the three aisles of the basilica.
After our awe inspiring tour of the Lost City of Petra we can relax and enjoy an authentic Middle Eastern meal in one of the local restaurants before beginning our journey back towards Aqaba.
Along the way we'll stop as several points of interest where you can take in the striking landscape of Wadi Rum. Jordan's largest valley is known for its unique sandstone formations, Jordan's highest peaks and the site of several caves with petroglyph prehistoric cave paintings. We arrive in Aqaba and take a short panoramic tour of the city where the knowledgeable guide will point out the city's highlights.  Our Jordanian adventure draws to an end as you are transferred across the Jordanian/Israeli border and back to your Eilat hotel.
