What To Expect

This Masada and Ein Gedi Nature Reserve tour heads off in the direction of the Dead Sea driving south past the Inn of the Good Samaritan and on through the Judean Desert. We stop briefly at the “sea level” sign for a photo-op then continue driving further and further below sea level.  In the distance, we can see the Biblical city of Jericho.
The tour’s first stop is Masada, a massive flat-topped rock outcrop that dominates the desert landscape. We take a cable car to Masada’s summit where King Herod built a fortress complex in 31-37 BC. Thanks to the dry climate and remote location the Roman remains have survived well. We tour the excavated bathhouse, palaces, store rooms, synagogue and other structures. Your tour guide will tell you about the dramatic events that took place on Masada 100 years after Herod built his complex. Learn about the group of Jews who retreated to the top of Masada during the First Jewish–Roman War (66–73 CE) and how they chose to kill themselves rather than surrender to the Romans. For this reason Masada has become a symbol of Jewish determination to preserve their nation’s independence. Leaving Masada the tour returns to the road that runs parallel to the Dead Sea and we stop at Ein Gedi. Ein Gedi is an oasis of streams, waterfalls and lush vegetation in the otherwise dry desert environment.
Ein Gedi Nature Reserve has well-maintained walkways that follow desert streams until they arrive at picturesque waterfalls cascading into natural pools. At Ein Gedi we can see many unique plants and trees as well as rare birds like the Tristram and animals including the agile ibex that defy gravity as they walk along the cliffs. Ein Gedi is mentioned in Psalms 104:18 and it was here that King David hid from King Saul (Samuel 1 24:1). As we make our way back along the desert road heading north we pass the caves of Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.
